Re - The Competitive Spirit of Gaming

First up Skillbill, like rubi said, very good article!

Feedback-wise, from my part, having played many years of SC:BW back in the day, and then moving onto other communities in FPS games there-after, I think a lot of the 'solution' to the problem you mentioned comes from the maturity of the players within a games community. This may be related to age, game-style, game-play, etc. What-ever the link is, I personally think maturity plays a large role. With maturity comes a greater sense of competition, as well as a higher analysis of the game and its factors, which leads to a deeper interest in the game.
Also, seeing as many older individuals play the game, and are part of the working class, some have found a means to make money from their input. This leads them putting in great effort in making a success of themselves. If they accomplish that, others follow in their foot-steps, creating a great influx of time, effort and knowledge into the game, be it managers, website, whatever.
I think a large portion of is made possible thanks to the creators, Blizzard, allowing for large scale viewing, and VERY easy multi-player functionality, both 'vs' and 'obs' mode due to battle.net.

To touch on another one of your points, I think that the willingness of high ranked players/teams posting their replays unlike other games comes from seeing as SC is mostly an individual based game, therefore recognition from other players is sort after that much more than other team-based games. Also, seeing as its majority 1v1, within 'clans', players from the same clan can go up against each-other competitively. This is not often seen in team based-games and FPS's. Also, when playing for 'yourself', you're more likely to see commitment increase, as all those you're playing against are also doing the same, playing for themselves. That automatically leads to larger competitiveness as you personally want to better yourself, as to put you in a position to win against the person you just lost to. In team games, a lot of the time you can blame other people for your loss/mistakes, therefore just leaving it at that, and not furthering your personal game.
Also to take into account is the size of SC replays, making it quick to post or send around. Minimal effort is required, with minimal knowledge needed, on a possible large scale data shared.
So yeah, thats my few cents and thoughts on the article. Hopefully it sheds some light on a possible answer, or at least gives you another personal point of view on which to look into.
