It's been quite a while since a ran a competition of some sort for the Call of Duty 4 community. First, starting off with that i-Game Sniper Competition, which became a rather tedious job sifting through screen-shots for scores, running after people that were impossible to contact and listen to the load of absolute bullshit excuses some people would come up with in hope that their team would be the one pushed through to the next stage. Basically, on a scale of 1 to the dog at my homework, the excuses would rank at about 9.
Luckily, theBISA didn't have that much bullshit involved. There was only one incident that i recall where a team (Prodigy) had to forfeit their position as king due to not being able to play in the allocated time. Area52, the team that took the position, unfortunately had a player that couldn't play during the week due to exams (Funny how we caught him playing the odd game during that period).
So here i am, sitting, listening to some instrumental tunes, wondering if i should put together a version 2 of theBISA. What format should it have? Rule list? Specific servers that it has to be played on? Let me go into some detail on each of those questions and explain my thought process as well as what was noticed during theBISA version1.
Format theBISA version 1 had a rather interesting format. King of the hill, with a twist here and there. Teams(4) were randomly selected to face off against each other in a BO1(best of 1) game, with a set map depending on which week it was(1 to 5). After fighting their way through 2 games, the team that is left would be up against theBISA(the reigning champion from the previous week) in a BO3 format where the 3 maps were randomly generated.
If i were to do another version, i would raise the competition's capacity from 4 to 8 teams, still have the set maps for rounds 1 - semi-final. And then have a BO3 where the top 3 maps that were voting for the week would be played. I see it as more of a community event than an actual competition. Other teams that don't compete, or do but make it that far generally play 1 game, if that, get dominated by a stronger/faster team, and learn almost nothing. With the map voting, those less experienced teams could listen in to commentating, or view a video-stream(assuming we do that) of the top voted map by them. Learning new strategies and watching the best teams (seeing as the competition is called The Best In South Africa). Also, I'm sure the demos of the nights games would be hosted on a this site(Bravado Gaming) with a match review by Vitrolic.
Rules and Servers Version 1 had very basic rules. You average, No cheating, No scripting (weapnext in particular), No skins etc. However, half of this couldn't be regulated. If we were to enforce that the teams play on WAGE servers (Clan or Pickup) then WAGE could, theoretically, enforce that default skins are to be used, packetdup can not exceed a particular value, and which other settings we would like to enforce to make the playing field that little bit more "fair".
Goal I want this to become and evolve from a mini-series into something more stable, something that has more infrastructure, a prize pool for players, and most importantly, i want it to be run by players. Players that know the game. There is nothing more frustrating than playing in a competition that has organizers that know diddly squat about the game and its formats.
These are all just ideas that are running around freely in my head. Feel free to mention anything that you would like to see in a mini-competition. Preferably, something that could be considered as a series. Marius(Stripe) mentioned having a 16 team triple elimination BO5 format. Surely that is not going to happen, but if we want to up our game to EU standard, perhaps we should put in more time? However, my opinion on time being spent: quality > quantity
I'll keep you guys informed of whats happening well in advance. I won't pull a DoGaming on the community Please comment!
